Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content discoverable and usable by AI answer engines, as search engine optimization does for search engines.
Practice and observation
GEO describes work done to content. A site’s logs describe only requests that reached the site. Those are different layers.
The directly measurable parts are attributable AI crawler fetches and AI referrals whose arriving requests name a known AI platform in the Referer header. They can be compared within a fixed window using a crawl-to-referral ratio.
Whether a given AI answer used or cited a page happens inside the model and leaves no trace in site logs. A site can observe a distinct page that an AI platform linked someone to when that person arrives, but it cannot reconstruct the answer or prove what produced the link.
The measurement limit
Even referrals are incomplete. AI platforms frequently strip the Referer header, so detected referrals are a floor rather than a total. Crawling shows that content was fetched, not that it was used in an answer, cited, or responsible for a later visit.
